Bio-based Materials and Technologies for Architecture and Building Construction

Currently I work with a team of biologists, chemists and a physicist. Although I already have a solid design experience, I am not hesitating to transfer my knowledge to this new related to structural architecture scientific field that seems scientifically inexhaustible. Architecture can not find a new space or a new color but can adapt itself to circular economy rules. I believe the architecture future belongs to this alternative approach to developing building construction and systems and replacing the existing "brick-on-brick" paradigm with a "grow-by-itself" one.
Scientific experience in this field is not a lot. That's why it is a necessity to perform a strongly multidisciplinary approach.

Научна дейност

Our team started three types of tries.
The tissues in the human body have an equivalent in a building. Our goal was to produce different samples of matter corresponding to the building materials like thermal insulation /TI/, board material /BM/ and exterior cladding material /ECD/. Our goal was that this material should be bio-based /BB/ and self-growing /SG/.
1. To produce TI using straw, alfalfa or cellulose as a hardware material and yeast as a bubble-producing agent. We currently have several material prototypes of thermal insulation.
2. The first step of BM production was also successful. Natural proteins achieved the adhesion of the particles in BM.
3. ECD tries had a good foundation on how cellulose, alginates, starch and other polysaccharides work together in specific ratios. BB and SG materials will lead to SG architectural technologies in the future, but another aspect is the computer control of the processes.

We had several tries to improve the yeast growing and use fibres as a dispersed reinforcement, lactic acid bacteria, and develop a biofilm,
We also had several tries but we are not sure we use the right bio-mater for the proper purpose. Different BB materials' differentiation is essential in finding their best role in a building.

So far, we have not tried CNC approaches. The media from the CNC to bio-matter can be both mechanical (3D printing, robotic) and intengible (waves, lasers, sound, light, etc.)
