Fifth Manuel de Solà-Morales European Prize 2025 - call for PhD thesis

07.05.2024, Laboratori d’Urbanisme de Barcelona

Participate for an award for best European doctoral thesis on urbanism!

Every two years, the Manuel de Solà-Morales European Prize recognizes the best university research in the field of urbanism carried out by a student granted a PhD. Our main goal is to find the very best European PhD from the last few years.

Candidates can be anyone studying at a European University whose research for their doctoral thesis is grounded in urbanism, according to the application procedure on lub.upc.edu/msmprize

The award honors the memory of Professor of Urbanism and architect, Manuel de Solà-Morales Rubio (1939-2012) who understood his subject as a creative and intellectual activity, committed to improving cities through what he called "persistent research".
The award is an academic initiative of the ETSAB (Barcelona School of Architecture) at the UPC (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) where he taught for more than forty years. The LUB (Barcelona Urbanism Laboratory) which he founded in 1968, organizes, oversees, and facilitates the development of the award and the maximum dissemination of the works which receive it.
The Laboratori d’Urbanisme de Barcelona, as part of the Department of Urbanism, Territory and Landscape (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona), recently became members of the AESOP (F-034-06).
Candidates can present any PhD thesis that has urbanism as the object of the candidate's research. The thesis must have been written in a European language and must have been presented and qualified in a European university between January, 1st 2020, and September 30th, 2024.
