Concept, subject and aims of the sustainable land use as a component of the sustainable development are discussed. Characteristics of the agricultural ecosystems and the connected environmental problems are considered in order to limit the negative impacts of intensive agriculture. The course is aimed at extending the student's knowledge of protection of soils as one of the most valuable natural resources as well as of the interaction "soil-plant" - the required base for the optimal crops selection and soil fertility conservation. The soil degradation processes (contamination, salinization, acidification, dehumification, compaction, erosion) and modern methods for their arresting are studied.
