The following are presented: the history of the discipline, the basic concepts and ideas of the current theory of architecture, modern hypotheses about the mechanisms and objective laws of the development of architecture as an art. Special attention is paid to the problem of the diversity of architectural functions, of the complex nature of architecture as a physical environment and a linguistic artistic structure.
