Steel Bridges

Steel Bridges

Specific aspects of fundamental bridge forms, conceptual and detailed design of steel bridges are discussed in the lecture course. A more detailed consideration is given to deck structures for highway and railway bridges including orthotropic steel decks, plate girders, box girders, truss girders, as well as bridge bracing systems. Composite bridges are also considered. Additional theoretical topics are also included: fatigue, shear lag in wide flanges, stability problems in plated structures. The specific aspects of bearing systems of steel bridges are discussed together with different types of bearings, including seismic issues. Brief knowledge is given on long-span systems: frame, arch, cable-stayed and suspension bridges.
